TURBINE TOWER

Turbine Tower 3D Print
Turbine Tower optimisation
The Turbine Tower 3D print was part of the final physical model component of my Netherlands Travelling Studio. Due to the complexity of the design, 3D printing was really the only viable option that would produce a decent result. I used a Z Corp 3D Printer which uses an inkjet-like printing head that moves across a bed of powder and selectively deposites a liquid binding material in the shape of the section. It has a minimum tolerance of about 2mm so there was some optimisation required after scaling down the model to size in order to make the print feasible.
The end result has a powered texture but is more rigid than ABS plastic printing and overall I feel has a nicer aesthetic. In order to complete the model, I used a 2mm metal rod for the axis, 3D printed a few circular discs from some left over clear perspex to create the platforms along the tower, and applied a metallic spray paint finish.
